As humans, we are surrounded by a lot of things that can scare us and a lot of things that are normal that scare some of us. For example, do you know anyone who is too scared to leave their house? They have agoraphobia. Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by symptoms of anxiety in situations where the person perceives the environment to be unsafe with no easy way to get away. These situations can include open spaces, public transit, shopping malls, or simply being outside the home.
A common phobia is Glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking. I didn’t know that word, I had to look that one up! I don’t think I have a fear of public speaking. But I don’t think it has anything to do with whether you are social or not. I think it has more to do with being comfortable with all of the attention on you. You are in “in the spotlight” (or the center of attention) and many people don’t like that. The expression “in the spotlight” goes back to the theater where the actor that was speaking literally had a light shone on them as they were acting.
- Scared of chickens? You have Alektorophobia!
- I definitely don’t have Ailurophobia, or a fear of cats!
- Do you have a fear of walking? You have Ambulophobia!
- Do you have a fear of numbers? I hated math but I wasn’t scared of math. But if I was, I would have had Arithmophobia!
- I definitely don’t have this one either! Astrophobia, or the fear of stars or celestial space. I love astronomy!
Okay, so these are some silly ones that I am sure are very rare.
But many people do have some degree of some phobia. For me, I guess I could say I have a little arachnaphobia. I am a little scared of spiders. If they are big or hairy, I am very scared of them. I usually can calmly remove them from the house and release them outside with no problem, but not if they are big or hairy! I am too scared to get near them! The worst part is when you see a spider, and go get something to pick it up with then it’s gone when you come back. hahaha I also have a little Apiphobia, or fear of bees. I was stung by a bee a few times as a child but I remember one time in particular where a hornet was chasing me in my aunt’s backyard and I was really scared because they are much larger than a regular bee and now I have a phobia. I get too scared, or more scared than I should when any stinging insect is near me.
What phobias do you have?
